Lacuna [also at ao3 | tumblr]
1300 words | PG-ish | Wanda Maximoff, Steve Rogers

The five stages of grief are meaningless in the moment.

By the time she had heard of the warning "before you go on a journey of revenge, dig two graves," Wanda had already dug more than that. It was cold comfort to know that even if she'd known of it beforehand, she would have done everything the same. Her rage had been a cold fire, burning everything it touched, and what she had been willing to do in its name, what she had done in its name... She had paid an appalling, unbearable price for her arrogance, but she wasn't sure if she could ever erase the debt of the rest.

Pietro, half of her soul and all of her light, was buried on a beautiful morning in the same cemetery as their parents with the other victims of Sokovia's endless wars. Wanda wasn't so sure about that, but Steve told her that she could not take the blame for his death.

"A very wise woman once told me that if I truly loved someone, I had to respect their agency and their choices," he said as they stood on a hill overlooking the cemetery. They'd walked up here by accident and by intent, her aimless direction and his determination to stay by her side. "Even if those choices had led them to following me where they didn't have to go and dying because of it. Or worse."

Duty [DW notice | tumblr notice]
8300 words | PG-ish | Clint Barton, Natasha Romanova, et al.

summary: The cost of keeping faith and keeping promises.

If they deserved it, then fine. Hill had been right – he’d sleep fine if these were two assholes with only evil in their hearts. But he didn’t want to terminate two kids – and they were kids – because some junior agent hadn’t worked hard enough to sway two idealistic idiots off of the path toward destruction. It was the hardest part of what he did, taking a kill order on faith. It happened more with SHIELD than it had back in the Army, where most of the time he or his unit had been a target of his target before he’d gotten to turn the tables. But SHIELD had a different mission and a different method and the first time Clint saw most of his targets was through the scope of his rifle when it was time to take the shot. Coulson had always given him details, more than needed to do the job, because he’d understood what he was asking Clint to do and what kind of cost it came with. His handlers since had tended to be younger, hadn’t come from either the armed services or SHIELD’s field division, and Clint had occasionally felt like they thought that they were playing a video game for all that they understood about the price of taking a life. And that in turn had made him feel like the weapon instead of the one wielding it, which made it easier to pull the trigger, but harder to keep the faith in the mission and with himself. The Hawkeye who ran on full automatic wasn’t someone he especially wanted to be around.

The Velveteen Spider [DW notice | tumblr notice]
26k words | PG-13-ish | Natasha Romanova, Clint Barton, et al.

summary: Natasha Romanova thinks that accepting Nick Fury's offer to join SHIELD is the end of her old life and the beginning of her new one. In hindsight, she had no idea of what that really meant.

“You’re an idiot, Barton,” she said when he’d finished. “An amazing idiot.”

He made a dismissive noise as he shifted over to get up, presumably to go to the restroom. “Is that anything to say to your best friend?”

She looked up at him, shocked at the words. “Who says that you are my best friend?”

“You got any others?” he asked with a shrug. “Therefore, I am the best one.”

“That means you are also the worst one,” she called after him as he headed off, but she was just drunk enough for the words to float around in her mind like mosquitoes.

She remembered the conversation the next morning, when she dragged her hungover but far more sturdy self to SHIELD’s New York headquarters off Times Square to go get yelled at by Coulson in person. She could say that Barton was presumptuous for considering himself her friend, but it would probably be more truthful to say that he’d simply recognized it sooner.

That’s when she started calling him Clint, first in her head and then out loud. The first time, it slipped out and it startled her. Startled Clint, too, but he recovered and beamed at her and then continued driving like a maniac because it was the only way they were going to get out of Hungary alive unless they wanted to swim the Danube from Budapest to Vienna.

A/N: This came to me on New Year’s Eve when I realized that 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of Bucky’s “death” and I began to wonder how Steve would handle that. This is my first full Bucky & Steve story ☺.
Summary: The last year has been hard on all the Avengers, but Steve in particular. His search for Bucky keeps coming up empty handed and all trails have gone cold. The rest of his team persuades him to let loose and relax some for New Year’s Eve. He never realized it would be exactly what he needed, in more ways than one, or that a certain friend had been watching out for him all along.

I participated in tumblr's BuckyNat minibang and, in a probably foreseeable result, utterly failed to follow directions and produced a long story of pure genfic.

Blues in the Groove
31k words | PG-13ish | Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanova, Steve Rogers, Maria Hill, et al.

Bucky Barnes is in from the cold and ready to take the first steps toward resuming his life. He has all of his memories, but Steve isn't the only Avenger eager to have someone around who remembers their past.

A tale in which there are embarrassing Captain America stories, occasional realizations, swing-dancing SHIELD commanders, missions gone awry, culinary adventures, uncomfortable revelations, trips to Queens, bromances, romances, repeated threats of arson, and the couch is a metaphor.

There's no bench, so Bucky leans against the railing of the handicap ramp while he reads over his papers again. They're clinical: "You have been certified 1-A by the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps. To complete your enlistment in the Jaeger Academy, report to Recruiting Station 482 on 17 April 2016. You will be assigned further instructions after completion of the final assessment." There's more, bunches of numbers and letters meant to explain his test results, probably, but they don't mean a damn thing to him.

Steve and Bucky join the PPDC. Bucky's not so sure how he feels about it, but he's working through it.

How to Beat a Kaiju Invasion (10242 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: The Avengers (Marvel Movies), Pacific Rim (2013)

Summary: The first one shows up about a year after the Chitauri invasion. It takes Hulk, Iron Man, SHIELD and the Army two days to take the thing down. (A story about accepting your limitations, overcoming your insecurities, and what it means to win a war.)

This is beautifully written, and turns a movie about giant-robots-punching-monsters into a story about people doing what they think is right, or necessary, and occasionally managing to do both. There are so many threads here about friendship and freedom and heroism and the author brings them together brilliantly.

(It's tagged with a background Tony/Steve relationship, but it is not at all the focus of the story.)

Cap/Avengers: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge [DW | AO3]
1600 words | PG-ish | Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner

Steve didn't go out of his way to follow the progress of the challenge, looking at the video clips his friends sent him but not searching them out himself. (Sam had an elaborate rating system and only passed on the ones that had a high degree of creativity and a decent chance of actual physical discomfort.) But Bruce’s explanation seemed to hold and while every athlete and actor and public figure seemed to be a part of it, Steve remained untouched and, apparently, off-limits.

"I feel like I'm eleven again, the last kid picked for stickball," he told Clint, who'd patted him on the shoulder and offered to hold his head under the ice-water dispenser in the fridge.

LP [DW | AO3]
2200 words | PG-ish | Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, Tony Stark

Summary: Steve doesn't prefer records just because they're old.
He’d learned about digital audio pretty early on — where SHIELD had gotten their poorly-chosen baseball game recording, how people listened to music nowadays, and so forth — but it had taken him a while to realize why songs that should have been achingly familiar to him all sounded off. He’d first thought it was the computer he was playing them on, then realized it wasn’t when he was given his first CD and Bing Crosby had sounded like he was supposed to. He’d let it go — too much else to learn about the twenty-first century — and simply stuck to the CDs and then the records he’d started to buy once someone had found him a working turntable. Once he’d had the time and the leisure and the understanding to investigate why nobody else seemed to mind what was wrong with digital music, he’d put aside his hard-earned independence and asked Tony instead. He’d meant it as a peace gesture; it had been shortly after the Battle of New York, when their alliance had still been fresh and delicate in its newness and had needed reinforcement away from the battlefield. And Tony had responded, both to the reaching-out and the actual question, and understanding lossy-versus-lossless-compression had become another link between them.

Field Trip [DW | AO3]
2400 words | PG-ish | Clint Barton, Bucky Barnes

Summary: Bucky's in from the cold and on his way to recovery. But getting through the day in Steve's apartment is a little different than going out and doing things as James Barnes among people once threatened by the masters of the Winter Soldier. Clint plays wingman on an errand that's more than an errand.

This is more or less a missing/companion scene from Remedial, although you can read this without having read that.

So I'm biased as this was a gift-fic, but it's also an amazing and eerie look at Natasha's sense of self when her memories are constantly being changed.

4600k words | PG-13 | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Avengers

1. affording remedy; tending to remedy something.
2. intended to correct or improve one's skill in a specified field: remedial math.

Steve always knew Bucky was a quick study, so his progress after he comes in from the cold is a 'when' and not an 'if.' The Avengers are a help, except when they're not. But even when they're not, they sort of are.

Cum Laude [DW | AO3]
5700 words | PG-13 | Steve Rogers, Avengers.

summary: Steve navigates the sometimes choppy seas of being a celebrity in the twenty-first century and finds the time to fulfill a twentieth century promise and return to school.

"Cooper Union has asked if you’d be willing to accept an honorary degree from them in May. It’d be a speech and the usual gladhanding, but they also want to pull together a retrospective of some of your work — it’s why they’re asking so early."

"Honestly? I’d be more interested if they were offering to let me finish my actual degree instead," he said as he stood up. He’d meant it as a joke when he’d spoken the words, but he realized that maybe that hadn’t come across and, in hindsight, whether that had been intentional.
