Remedial [AO3 | DW]
4600k words | PG-13 | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Avengers

re·me·di·al
adjective
1. affording remedy; tending to remedy something.
2. intended to correct or improve one's skill in a specified field: remedial math.

Steve always knew Bucky was a quick study, so his progress after he comes in from the cold is a 'when' and not an 'if.' The Avengers are a help, except when they're not. But even when they're not, they sort of are.

That Others May Live (only on AO3 because of length)
15k words | PG-13-ish | Sam Wilson, Avengers, Bucky Barnes

summary: Sam was prepared to help Steve bring Bucky Barnes in from the cold, but this is not exactly how he'd figured on it going down.

This is a timestamp/POV shift for the end of Recursive. It is possible to read this without having read the original story, but it's probably more fun if you do that first.

Oh wow, guys, this one is an insta-rec. Really vivid characters, wonderful Sam Wilson voice, awesome worldbuilding. Between the '30s and the present, it became okay to keep your wings.
“Yeah, I know, I know. I’m not defending it, it’s just what we had to do, back then, to give anyone a chance.” He glances over, watching Sam absently straighten out his flight pinions, and his voice softens. “I wish it hadn’t taken so long for things to change.”

Because of course you needed Natasha and the Winter Soldier going undercover at a chess competition. Funny until it socks you in the gut, of course.
“Alright then, Scary Kasparov,” said Natasha in English, and headed to the door. "Let's get to it."
“What?” said the Winter Soldier, whose perfect understanding of English stopped just short of jokes.

On the Road by [archiveofourown.org profile] kilicakes (1500 words)
Post-Winter Soldier Bucky takes refuge in a shed in Tennessee somewhere. Did you like that kid from Iron Man 3? If so, you're in for a treat.
Bucky was relieved to find the square little structure on the outskirts of town. Sure, it was small, but it looked like enough to at least stay the night in.
But Bucky didn’t expect to be lobbed in the head by a stray potato upon entry.

"To everyone who doesn’t live there, D.C.'s just a convenient reservoir for an entire country's emotions. Steve can relate." A really lovely look at Steve figuring out the nation's capitol and how it is one lives there.
He worries for a moment that the people standing behind him will recognize him. But here, Steve's more recognizable when he wears a mask.

The Only World We've Got by [archiveofourown.org profile] andibeth82 (2800 words)
Sharon Carter, and where she gets her toughness. I always love seeing stories about Sharon and Peggy and how they're close; this one has bonus excellent Natasha too.
“Your mother was not wrong to reprimand you,” Peggy says with a voice that sounds like it’s seen war, and Sharon is not yet old enough to understand that it has. “But you were also not wrong to fight back.”

Recursive
67K words | PG-13 | Steve Rogers; Avengers; Howling Commandos

summary In the wake of the HYDRA revelations, Steve Rogers finds himself both a pawn of the rebuilding SHIELD hierarchy and the leader of a newly-independent Avengers. He’s got masters he can’t run from, teammates he can’t let down, and a best friend who is turning his newly remembered past to ashes.

But when a blast from a mysterious device seemingly sends him back to 1944, Steve has to decide if he should he change his past and risk ruining his future by fixing his greatest mistake.

I've posted a few gen fics lately; here they are!

Little Repairs - 3100 wds; Bucky, Tony, Steve
Tony repairs Bucky's arm; Bucky tries not to freak out about it. Set in some hypothetical future time after CA2.

Wingthieves - 2800 wds; Sam, Steve, Natasha
Missing scene for CA2: how a carful of fugitives stole a piece of top-secret military hardware off a heavily guarded Army base.

By Choice or By Habit - 6500 wds; Bucky plus Steve and the full Avengers team
For [livejournal.com profile] illumynare's request: "How about something with Bucky realizing the Avengers actually think of him as a person?" Friendship fluff, character study and h/c.

Fandom: Captain America (movies)
Characters: Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers (through texts), James “Bucky” Barnes
Summary: Even with all his hair hacked off, he doesn't look like a Bucky, Sam thinks. Maybe as some sort of stupid joke, like naming your most vicious dog Sweetpea. Steve's told him the stories, and he's seen the old newsreels; he knows what this Barnes guy used to be like. But it's not like knowing what to look for is going to magically make some spark rise to the top. This isn't an excavation.

More Bucky-as-metaphorical-feral-cat recovery fic. Cameos from Tony, Natasha, Bruce and Sam.
Steve knows that when Bucky says do you remember these days, what he really means is that really happened, didn’t it, it’s a real memory?

The Elephant Kids by [archiveofourown.org profile] Pyrosane
I just love the atmosphere and the emotional resonance in this one.
The first time Steve ever stole a car, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Bucky had pitched the thought and whatever Bucky pitched was what happened next, because Bucky may have been an idiot but he also knew what it meant to be alive.

Count the Cost by [archiveofourown.org profile] katydidmischief
Homeless Bucky on the run seems to be a thing now. What I like about this is how the search for Bucky and the need to give him space coexist.
He tries to strangle Steve every time the man appears over the intervening weeks: he trashes two televisions and half a dozen radios, his reaction escalating to Rogers' own image or voice.

I also want to remind folks that we've got an open call for links to icons that has already yielded some pretty excellent finds. \o/

These are (mostly) gen, and if there are pairings, they are implied, incidental, or just barely getting started (basically, they are not the focus of the story). I've recced some of these before, but they're so good, I'm sharing them again.

The Care and Feeding of Traumatized Assassins by [archiveofourown.org profile] sholio
I'm super into these Winter Soldier fix-it fics, and this one does a nice job of mimicking the film's way of making Bucky present by making him absent. Also a good take on how to deal with who Bucky is now. Features Steve, Sam and Natasha, to great effect.
By the third or fourth time that he comes home to the feeling of not-quite-right, the unsettling sense that things in the apartment have been moved around, he's gone from suspicion to a dead certainty.

Sharon Carter/Agent 13 POV and backstory! Talks about her relationship with SHIELD, Peggy and the events of Cap 2.
Sharon Carter grew up knowing the feel of bullets in her fingers, not rosaries. She learned Mandarin, German and Japanese, not Latin, because Latin was a dead language and Sharon, even at eight, knew her work would be for the living.

In the Land That Our Grandchildren Knew by [archiveofourown.org profile] domarzione
So Domenika Marzione has written more than 400K about Team Cap. This is a rich, interesting (and only 15K) look at Bucky both before he enlists (or was drafted, depending on who you ask) and through the experiments Hydra performs on him in the first movie.
Once they'd saved up enough cash, it took them more than a month to find a day to get out to the World's Fair.
