Really psychologically gripping portrayal of the Black Widow's own experience with training, torture and mind-wipes. And the Winter Soldier as written here is just heart-stopping, terrifying and sad. If you like fic about the Black Widow and her comics backstory with the Red Room, if you like stories about how you break down and build up weapons who used to be people, if you like Yelena Belova and fairy tales and ballet, if you like the Winter Soldier in his element, read this.
He speaks English with an American accent so exact it is almost disturbing; there is a thoughtlessness in the cadence of his vowels that can't be taught, can't be programmed, can't be replaced. She can imagine his handlers stabbing furiously at buttons, trying to erase his ain'ts and his dames. She can imagine how stubbornly his subconscious held on.

"Of course you can rename him, but we recommend something that's close to the name he's got now, or at least rhymes," the lady says as they fill out the adoption paperwork. "Do you have something in mind?"
"Yeah," says Bucky, and leans in a little past Sam so he can meet Steve's eyes with something like a smirk on his face. "I'm gonna call him Steve."

Apparently I'm a huge sucker for Darcy and Bucky in any combination, and this is literally mostly them hanging out in Steve's apartment while Darcy cat-sits and Bucky is full of sass. Cameos from other team members, pretty much zero angst, lots of fun so far!
"I looked you up on Wikipedia," Darcy said, pointing at him with her fork. "It said you were born in 1917. But I figure you're not a vampire because you ate all my garlic pizza. Thanks for that, it was going to be my breakfast."

Erskine's serum enhances Steve's body but doesn't actually take away his previous ailments. So… yeah — what if Captain America also has asthma? It's actually quite lovely, and has great moments with both Bucky, in flashbacks, and Tony, who hates caves.
After the first mission -- immediately after, when the city's still smoking and everyone's still in their singed, bloody costumes -- they go for food. Shawarma, apparently, not that Steve can really focus on what it tastes like, let alone what it's called. He can feel the tell-tale odd shifting in his chest, the light-headedness that's his body letting him know that he's not in charge. He knows what comes next, and all he can think about is getting through this meal without anyone noticing, getting through before it gets worse.

“I’m not an engineer,” Steve said. “I’m a sock knitter. You know? Knit, purl, increase, decrease. This—this is not a sock.” He jammed the stitches down the circular needle and tossed the snarl of pewter-colored yarn onto the coffee table.
“Looks okay,” Tony said. “Oh. Wait. Not okay.”
“Aw, knitting, no,” Clint said.
The Dawn of That Last Great Day byignipes (14K)
Written pre-Cap 2; a really satisfying alternative take on how Bucky comes back.
He's been under for seven years. Everybody has a camera on their phone now, and aliens from outer space have attacked New York. That's almost as exciting as when they woke him up just in time to watch the Mets beat the Red Sox in the '86 World Series.
