If you want to see some neat collaborative storytelling at work, [tumblr.com profile] howtheymakeyouaweapon hosts both links to fic related to How They Make You a Weapon by [archiveofourown.org profile] monicawoe ("Lovingly detailed dark!fic about the process by which Hydra turned Bucky into the Winter Soldier") and the accompanying comics adaptations by [tumblr.com profile] luckyraeve of portions of the fic.

I liked the fic, but I'm loving the incredible art. Beautiful and distressing and very detailed and rich.

The Priming Game by [archiveofourown.org profile] amonitrate (12K)
Rhodey POV on Tony coming back from Afghanistan and slowly understanding what might have happened to him there. A lot of realizing how very not okay Tony is, and a lot of Rhodey being competent as hell.
The second thing Tony says is "It's not what you think." He reaches up with his left hand and covers the light bleeding through his dirty undershirt. Blueish, electric light, visible even in the full glare of the desert sun. Rhodey hasn't had time to form a thought about what it means, so he just stares until the medic nudges him aside.

Coming Up for Air by [archiveofourown.org profile] hetrez (1K)
Bucky finally has a good day. Palpable relief of an almost intoxicating sort.
Out of all the people living in the Tower, Sam seemed to get the hang of Bucky first.
sholio: Sebastian Stan as Bucky (Winter Soldier Bucky)
[personal profile] sholio
Both of these fics have excellent (though different) post-TWS Bucky voice -- confused and resilient and slowly finding his way back to himself, whatever that means for him in the post-Winter Soldier era.

Escapement (5896 words) by kvikindi
Summary: You can't unwind the clock.
Wrenching but hopeful recovery fic with especially neat Bucky and Tony interaction.

and feel its total dark sublime (5343 words) by schweinsty
Summary: How the Winter Soldier went looking for Bucky Barnes, and what (and who) he found there.
Bucky wanders the world and slowly recovers pieces of himself along the way.

[personal profile] newredshoes
Okay, it's a little devastating. If you're looking for an atmospheric, tense, wrenching-but-ultimately-will-leave-you-sobbing-in-relief-a-little look at Bucky in a future where he's living with Steve and trying to understand who he is and isn't, have I got a fic for you.

ellipsing by [archiveofourown.org profile] SomeTorist (3600 words)
Deceptively simple. Okay, pretty devastating, but in a good way. One quick warning: contains illness ), if you don't want to be surprised.
She sits with you. You and her on the roof’s edge, Steve seven floors down with his back against the door he gave you.
You sleep less. You never see her sleep. Steve only naps.

Songs of Innocence and Experience by [archiveofourown.org profile] kvikindi (Drabbles; ongoing)
So when I say these are drabbles, what I really mean is these are intense and complicated looks at Peggy Carter and Howard Stark and Alexander Pierce and Steve and Bucky, which are only "drabbles" inasmuch as they appeared as responses to Tumblr prompts first. Cannot recommend enough.
"It’s a new era. You’re a futurist, Dr. Stark."
"In my darker moments," Howard said. "I try not to be."

R: We were friends, we are friends. You’re my best friend.
B: My job was to kill you.
R: Yeah, but you didn’t.
B: Captain, you seem to have very low standards for friends.

Title: Catch A Falling Knife
Rating: PG-13
Pairing/Characters: Bucky, Steve
Word Count: 4991
Summary: He can't avert his eyes, suddenly. The back of his head prickles with something that wants to be familiarity, recognition, but all it does is confuse him. He doesn't understand. He squints to read the name under the photo on the tiny screen. Steve Rogers.

That time Tony gave Bucky a therapy llama.
Quinoa’s protective animal instincts kick in. After Steve squirms away from the llama’s inquiring lips on the back of his neck, she snakes in between him and Barnes to sample Steve’s untouched side salad.
“Oh,” says Bruce. “Yeah, this is totally necessary.”

Summary: "Do you remember anything?" the man says. "Do you know who you are?"
He stares, trying to connect himself as he is now to something that existed before. There is nothing, and the concept fits strangely in his head, unsettled and instinctive and repulsive at the same time.
"No," he says finally.

This is a lovely, wrenching take on certain post-CA:TWS themes, and I thoroughly adored it.

Blood Red Room [ AO3 | DW ]
2000 words / PG-13 /  Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanov

Field Trip [DW | AO3]
2400 words | PG-ish | Clint Barton, Bucky Barnes

Summary: Bucky's in from the cold and on his way to recovery. But getting through the day in Steve's apartment is a little different than going out and doing things as James Barnes among people once threatened by the masters of the Winter Soldier. Clint plays wingman on an errand that's more than an errand.

This is more or less a missing/companion scene from Remedial, although you can read this without having read that.

So I'm biased as this was a gift-fic, but it's also an amazing and eerie look at Natasha's sense of self when her memories are constantly being changed.

(And has a bonus cameo of Winter Soldier.)

re·me·di·al
adjective
1. affording remedy; tending to remedy something.
2. intended to correct or improve one's skill in a specified field: remedial math.

Steve always knew Bucky was a quick study, so his progress after he comes in from the cold is a 'when' and not an 'if.' The Avengers are a help, except when they're not. But even when they're not, they sort of are.

Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Wings, Backstory, Non-Linear Narrative
Summary: Several years before Sam was born, a Supreme Court ruling decided that those who carried and visibly expressed a hereditary winged trait could not be mutilated, amputated, or otherwise altered without their consent, nor could they be discriminated against for housing, employment, etc. based on their possession of wings.

The world that Sam grows up in is one that remembers when it had been different. [Wing!fic AU.]

I just read this and had to run over to rec it, because it is AMAZING. The worldbuilding is incredible, and it slots perfectly into canon, the AU differences working seamlessly with what is already there. Sam, Sam, Sam! And Steve, and Bucky, and OCs so vivid that I'm sad they aren't actually going to be in the movies. There is lots of good fic in this fandom, but I think this is one of my absolute favorites, the kind of story you come back to again and again because it's not only amazing fanfic but good fiction, period.

The Dud by [archiveofourown.org profile] nimmieamee (7500 words)
Oh man oh man oh man. Incredible narrative voice, really rich and engrossing world-building and atmosphere, a total period piece. A neat take on how Bucky and Steve get to be friends as kids, as well as a good look at what it means to be a chronically ill child in the '20s with the eugenics movement going on in the background.
“You don’t want me to pay you?” Bucky hazarded.
“No,” said Steve. He continued to stare at his knees. Thinking. Evidently he and Bucky were not square, not even after Bucky had saved his life.
“Well, you’re welcome,” Bucky muttered, after a minute.
“I gave you a paper,” Steve clarified.
“You can’t give somebody a paper instead of thanking them!” Bucky said.
“Sure I can,” said Steve. “Just did. Can take care of my own problems anyway. But thanks, if it means that much to you.”

15k words | PG-13-ish | Sam Wilson, Avengers, Bucky Barnes

summary: Sam was prepared to help Steve bring Bucky Barnes in from the cold, but this is not exactly how he'd figured on it going down.

Oh wow, guys, this one is an insta-rec. Really vivid characters, wonderful Sam Wilson voice, awesome worldbuilding. Between the '30s and the present, it became okay to keep your wings.
“Yeah, I know, I know. I’m not defending it, it’s just what we had to do, back then, to give anyone a chance.” He glances over, watching Sam absently straighten out his flight pinions, and his voice softens. “I wish it hadn’t taken so long for things to change.”

Repetition of position by [archiveofourown.org profile] acaramelmacchiato (1900 words)
Because of course you needed Natasha and the Winter Soldier going undercover at a chess competition. Funny until it socks you in the gut, of course.
“Alright then, Scary Kasparov,” said Natasha in English, and headed to the door. "Let's get to it."
“What?” said the Winter Soldier, whose perfect understanding of English stopped just short of jokes.

On the Road by [archiveofourown.org profile] kilicakes (1500 words)
Post-Winter Soldier Bucky takes refuge in a shed in Tennessee somewhere. Did you like that kid from Iron Man 3? If so, you're in for a treat.
Bucky was relieved to find the square little structure on the outskirts of town. Sure, it was small, but it looked like enough to at least stay the night in.
But Bucky didn’t expect to be lobbed in the head by a stray potato upon entry.
