Allies [also at: ao3 | tumblr ]
1500 words | Bucky Barnes, Peggy Carter (Steve Rogers)

It's less strange bedfellows and more complementary parts: Bucky Barnes and Peggy Carter have more in common than Steve Rogers: they have a war to win. And a war to survive.

2) the details

Sam Wilson, Actual Badass

The requirements and qualifications for becoming a USAF Pararescueman. Or, why Sam wasn't kidding when he said he does everything Steve does, just slower.

Resonance
3300 words | PG-ish | Tony Stark, Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers, Pepper Potts, etc.

Tony's reasons for helping Bucky Barnes can be entirely attributable to general do-gooderism and a love of science. (Because he really, really hates it when people rub his personal growth in his face.)

Creation Myth [also at: tumblr | ao3]
870 words | PG-ish | Steve Rogers (Howling Commandos)

Smoke, mirrors, and the true birth of the Howling Commandos

True Faith and Allegiance
2000 words | PG-ish | Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Clint Barton

"Are you ready to follow Captain America into the jaws of death?" means something else in the Twenty-First Century. Bucky Barnes has the same answer. Sam Wilson, former Avenger and current fugitive, appreciates that on many levels, including the ones he's sure he's missing.

Reclamation
1100 words | PG-ish | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes

A possibly unnecessary epilogue-ish bit for Preserved, aka the Steve Is the 1950s Winter Soldier store, which probably does need to be read first for context.

Summary: Bucky Barnes is used to strange happenings; his time with the Howling Commandos has guaranteed that. He's therefore not totally thrown off balance when he wakes up in an extraordinary tower in a seemingly impossible year. He can’t help but be worried though, no matter how much reassurance he's getting from Steve and his new team.

Lovely long gen fic with an excellent, twisty plot. I overlooked this when it came out last year, and even though I'm not generally reading CA fic these days, it sucked me right back in! Highly recommended for all your plotty gen needs.

Summary: What do you do when the Winter Soldier breaks down your front door one Saturday morning? If your name is Carter, you do your job like a professional.
“No breaking,” Fury told her, once the tape was done. “No little signals, no dropped hints, no ‘Hey, can you guess who I might be related to?’ Nothing to compromise your cover. But I don’t have to tell you that, do I, Agent 13?”

Sharon looked away from the surveillance footage: Steve Rogers drifting through a cabin in an undisclosed location, that morning’s timestamp floating in the corner of the screen. In her peripheral vision, Hill studied a duplicate of the folder Sharon held. “I’m not cute like that, sir,” she said, and she felt the room settle, satisfied.

(MCU, Natasha Romanova, James "Bucky" Barnes, 200 words)
Folklore of the Red Room.

~~~
"Don't cry," they are told when they're first brought to the dormitories, "the Soldat watches over you."
Stolen from home with brutal efficiency, too young to understand what awaits them, they take it for comfort. It's only after they've had their first lessons in what the Red Room requires that they know it for a threat.
Yet those who survive long enough to train under the Soldat find while he's an exacting teacher, he's not a cruel one. He doesn't torment; kills only when necessary. His codename becomes comfort again when nothing else is.
"Don't cry," they whisper to each other in the dark, though none of them cry anymore except as an interrogation method. The words are a ritual, a spell against the possibility that tomorrow they may be ordered to murder each other. "Don't cry, the Soldat watches over you."
It's been a decade since she scattered the Red Room's ashes on a biting wind, but Natasha tastes them now as the Soldat sweats and shakes beside her in a motel bed outside of Williamsburg. He murmurs something, his voice catching, and she presses a cool cloth to his forehead.
"Don't cry," she says. "I'm watching over you."
A/N: This came to me on New Year’s Eve when I realized that 2015 marked the 70th anniversary of Bucky’s “death” and I began to wonder how Steve would handle that. This is my first full Bucky & Steve story ☺.
Summary: The last year has been hard on all the Avengers, but Steve in particular. His search for Bucky keeps coming up empty handed and all trails have gone cold. The rest of his team persuades him to let loose and relax some for New Year’s Eve. He never realized it would be exactly what he needed, in more ways than one, or that a certain friend had been watching out for him all along.
I participated in tumblr's BuckyNat minibang and, in a probably foreseeable result, utterly failed to follow directions and produced a long story of pure genfic.
Blues in the Groove
31k words | PG-13ish | Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanova, Steve Rogers, Maria Hill, et al.
Bucky Barnes is in from the cold and ready to take the first steps toward resuming his life. He has all of his memories, but Steve isn't the only Avenger eager to have someone around who remembers their past.
A tale in which there are embarrassing Captain America stories, occasional realizations, swing-dancing SHIELD commanders, missions gone awry, culinary adventures, uncomfortable revelations, trips to Queens, bromances, romances, repeated threats of arson, and the couch is a metaphor.
A story and its prequel, AU to both Captain America: the First Avenger and Agent Carter:
Premise: after the rescue of the 107th, Steve Rogers cashes in all of his favors and makes what deals he can to get Bucky a medical discharge from the Army, sending him home to Brooklyn and far from enemies and curious scientists both. But Steve's war goes on until it ends badly, in an exploding plane over the Black Sea. Captain America is presumed dead, his shield recovered and returned to a grieving America while his body remains undiscovered.
72K words | Peggy Carter, Bucky Barnes
1952: a new danger is threatening to unbalance the already-roiling Cold War: a Soviet assassin let loose from behind the Iron Curtain. Peggy Carter isn't sure she wants to believe that the assassin is a super-soldier because of what it could mean, but she does know that whoever it is, she'll have to break her promise to keep Bucky Barnes far from danger.
If you've been waiting since the first time it was recced here, as a WIP, I have great news for you, friends: This, You Protect by [archiveofourown.org profile] owlet wrapped up today at a glorious 64K.
It started off as a hilarious one-shot about the Asset's mission imperative switching from killing Steve Rogers to protecting him. As Barnes rediscovers himself and his humanity, he picks up an incredible cast of supporting characters (in every sense of the word) along the way. It's not just a long and funny story, though: it's got incredible heart and a poignant-as-hell look at what waking up in the future has done to everybody.
As far as I'm concerned, this is 33 espresso shots of pure joy, and every last chapter delivers. Do yourself a favor and read this. You'll be really, really happy you did.
Speaking of which, happy 2015, whether it's already reached you or if it's coming soon!
TITLE: To Believe in Things That Aren't True
RATING: PG
WORDS: 677
WARNINGS: None
CHARACTERS: Darcy Lewis, Bucky Barnes
A/N: Inspired by this picture-and-quote-set and Discworld's general awesome. The italicised dialogue comes from the live-action adaptation of Hogfather. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] taste_is_sweet for her helpful read-over ♥
SUMMARY: “So you're saying humans need fantasies to make life bearable?” Susan Sto Helit asked her grandfather on the TV screen.
No. Humans need fantasy to be human,” said Death.
Darcy couldn't say what alerted her to the fact that someone else was not to so much in the room as standing behind her and staring. Some part of her lizard-brain finally woke up and she turned slightly, saw a figure, jumped and flailed and went, “Augh!” like the totally smooth superhero sidekick she was.
James Barnes winced.
Just because Darcy was currently at Stark Tower was no reason to break her Christmas tradition of watching Hogfather. But this year, she gained company in the shape of a recovering former assassin.
There's a really excellent post-TWS Bucky-recovery WiP I've been reading on AO3 -- I know it's getting to the point where there aren't very many new versions of that story to tell, but gen ones are still relatively rare, and I think the author has a really unique take on it (Bucky already has an escape plan in case he ever gets away from Hydra, and this is the story of how that works out for him). It's a WiP, but so far updates have been pretty reliable, and I think it might particularly appeal to readers who like a resourceful, functional Bucky in their post-TWS fic.
So, he ran.
Regret to inform [DW | AO3 | tumblr ]
1500 words | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, etc.
Steve didn't have blood family, but he did have people he'd had to tell that he was leaving Brooklyn and at the top of the list, ahead of his boss at the shop and landlady, had been the Barneses. They were as close as he came to blood kin; he had been an honorary fifth Barnes child for most of his life just as Bucky had been welcome in his mother's home. And if Mrs. Barnes had been just a little more insistent on Steve's attendance at a Sunday supper after Bucky had been packed off to the Army, Steve hadn't really minded for more reasons than just the opportunity for a roast dinner. There'd been tearful hugs and promises to write -- more than Bucky did -- when he'd left, officially to go down to DC to draw things for the war effort (maps or propaganda posters, he'd left it a little vague). He still got dutiful letters from the younger Barnes siblings, along with the occasional packet of treats and offers to purchase whatever items he couldn't find where he was because they knew how hard it was for Bucky to keep in socks and toothpaste, even if Steve was only in DC.
Summary:
There's no bench, so Bucky leans against the railing of the handicap ramp while he reads over his papers again. They're clinical: "You have been certified 1-A by the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps. To complete your enlistment in the Jaeger Academy, report to Recruiting Station 482 on 17 April 2016. You will be assigned further instructions after completion of the final assessment." There's more, bunches of numbers and letters meant to explain his test results, probably, but they don't mean a damn thing to him.
Steve and Bucky join the PPDC. Bucky's not so sure how he feels about it, but he's working through it.
