The Velveteen Spider [DW notice | tumblr notice]
26k words | PG-13-ish | Natasha Romanova, Clint Barton, et al.
summary: Natasha Romanova thinks that accepting Nick Fury's offer to join SHIELD is the end of her old life and the beginning of her new one. In hindsight, she had no idea of what that really meant.
“You’re an idiot, Barton,” she said when he’d finished. “An amazing idiot.”
He made a dismissive noise as he shifted over to get up, presumably to go to the restroom. “Is that anything to say to your best friend?”
She looked up at him, shocked at the words. “Who says that you are my best friend?”
“You got any others?” he asked with a shrug. “Therefore, I am the best one.”
“That means you are also the worst one,” she called after him as he headed off, but she was just drunk enough for the words to float around in her mind like mosquitoes.
She remembered the conversation the next morning, when she dragged her hungover but far more sturdy self to SHIELD’s New York headquarters off Times Square to go get yelled at by Coulson in person. She could say that Barton was presumptuous for considering himself her friend, but it would probably be more truthful to say that he’d simply recognized it sooner.
That’s when she started calling him Clint, first in her head and then out loud. The first time, it slipped out and it startled her. Startled Clint, too, but he recovered and beamed at her and then continued driving like a maniac because it was the only way they were going to get out of Hungary alive unless they wanted to swim the Danube from Budapest to Vienna.

The Good, the Bad and the Fluffy by
newredshoes (2900 words, Bucky + ensemble)
That time Tony gave Bucky a therapy llama.
Quinoa’s protective animal instincts kick in. After Steve squirms away from the llama’s inquiring lips on the back of his neck, she snakes in between him and Barnes to sample Steve’s untouched side salad.
“Oh,” says Bruce. “Yeah, this is totally necessary.”

Cap/Avengers: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge [DW | AO3]
1600 words | PG-ish | Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner
1600 words | PG-ish | Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Bruce Banner
Steve didn't go out of his way to follow the progress of the challenge, looking at the video clips his friends sent him but not searching them out himself. (Sam had an elaborate rating system and only passed on the ones that had a high degree of creativity and a decent chance of actual physical discomfort.) But Bruce’s explanation seemed to hold and while every athlete and actor and public figure seemed to be a part of it, Steve remained untouched and, apparently, off-limits.
"I feel like I'm eleven again, the last kid picked for stickball," he told Clint, who'd patted him on the shoulder and offered to hold his head under the ice-water dispenser in the fridge.

Remedial [AO3 | DW]
4600k words | PG-13 | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Avengers
4600k words | PG-13 | Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Avengers
re·me·di·al
adjective
1. affording remedy; tending to remedy something.
2. intended to correct or improve one's skill in a specified field: remedial math.
Steve always knew Bucky was a quick study, so his progress after he comes in from the cold is a 'when' and not an 'if.' The Avengers are a help, except when they're not. But even when they're not, they sort of are.

I have been collecting a bunch of recs that I haven't been sharing here. Mea culpa! There are all kinds of good ones to be had, though.

Peggy moving on and living her life. Great little character moments.

More Bucky-as-metaphorical-feral-cat recovery fic. Cameos from Tony, Natasha, Bruce and Sam.
Steve knows that when Bucky says do you remember these days, what he really means is that really happened, didn’t it, it’s a real memory?
The Elephant Kids by
Pyrosane
I just love the atmosphere and the emotional resonance in this one.
The first time Steve ever stole a car, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. Bucky had pitched the thought and whatever Bucky pitched was what happened next, because Bucky may have been an idiot but he also knew what it meant to be alive.
Count the Cost by
katydidmischief
Homeless Bucky on the run seems to be a thing now. What I like about this is how the search for Bucky and the need to give him space coexist.
He tries to strangle Steve every time the man appears over the intervening weeks: he trashes two televisions and half a dozen radios, his reaction escalating to Rogers' own image or voice.
I also want to remind folks that we've got an open call for links to icons that has already yielded some pretty excellent finds. \o/

[This is re-posted from my personal journal, now with my commentary!]
These are (mostly) gen, and if there are pairings, they are implied, incidental, or just barely getting started (basically, they are not the focus of the story). I've recced some of these before, but they're so good, I'm sharing them again.

These are older, but I love them all! I re-read them sometimes and cackle.
